Rites of Passage

Rites of Passage Ceremony for Cohort 6

Description:  At the completion of the MSHE program, graduating students participate in a Rites of Passage ceremony in which they are recognized for their work and completion of the program and are welcomed into the student affairs profession by the program’s faculty and the college of education. The event doubles as a research symposium showcasing the work of the graduating cohort and the cohort behind them. The event is planned and organized by a committee and the next year’s graduating cohort help to execute the plans of the committee.

Reflection:

The Rites of Passage Ceremony and Research Symposium honoring cohort 6 was a very moving and motivating occasion. The planning process provided leadership opportunities and the event itself allowed members of cohort 6 to practice working as a team to carryout an event plant. It was interesting to see how we all worked together and looked to our leads to help trouble-shoot issues that arose, especially as we begin to think about planning and executing the Maywood Educational Fair.

For SLO #1, I rated myself as Basic because I felt that I was present and ready to support the vision of our committee leaders, however, I did not hold a leadership role in the planning or execution of the event. I arrived early to help set-up and sought out a task as soon as one was completed. I worked closely with my cohort mates to decorate the room and worked at the check-in booth with my cohort mate, Zach.

For SLO #2, I rated myself as Competent because I reflected upon things that I observed to be meaningful to my understanding of the Rites of Passage ceremony. I feel that my reflection was thoughtful and explored how the ceremony showcases both the work of MSHE students and the values of the College of Education. To improve my reflection, I could have paid attention to specific elements of the event to understand how those events intentionally reflect the values of the program.
